Case Studies

Housing Sector

Helping tenants to fully understand the implications of welfare reform and complement the work of their Specialist Welfare Reform Advice Team.

New Charter Housing Trust Group collaborated with Afta Thought to create “Confusion Street,” an innovative drama-based training program aimed at clarifying complex Welfare Reform changes for 690 staff and tenants across Tameside, Oldham, and Nottingham.

Traditional communication methods had proven ineffective, so this immersive experience transformed New Charter’s offices into a cobbled street set to dramatize the impact of Welfare Reform, blending serious themes with humour.

The program included tailored sessions for both tenants and staff, featuring practical advice such as rent implications and housing options through elements like the ‘Banker’s Shop.’

As a result, tenants found the messaging clearer and more engaging, prompting meaningful dialogue and direct access to support services. Staff also gained greater awareness and connection with tenants’ challenges, enhancing their ability to support them effectively.

Developing carers’ understanding of dementia and highlighting how to improve the quality of care provided.

National Museums Liverpool partnered with Afta Thought to create the House of Memories Dementia Education and Training Programme aimed at health and social care staff in Merseyside and North Cheshire.

The project focused on enhancing carers’ understanding of dementia through person-centred care, empathy development, knowledge of dementia’s stages, and appreciation of the family perspective, using NML’s collections as resources.

Afta Thought designed and delivered training that significantly increased participants’ knowledge and skills, leading to a notable shift in how carers engaged with people living with dementia.

The programme’s learning outcomes aligned with established dementia care competencies, and NML praised Afta Thought for their expert contribution and alignment with the project’s innovative goals.

Care Sector

Ensuring everyone in THF’s care is safer, and staff feel empowered and confident in dealing with any safeguarding issues.

Tottenham Hotspur Foundation partnered with Afta Thought to enhance their existing safeguarding training for 50 staff and coaches, focusing especially on vulnerable young people, including children in care.

The programme featured interactive, scenario-based sessions with actors presenting real-life situations tailored to THF’s context, covering critical issues such as sexual abuse, bullying, domestic abuse, homophobia, and inappropriate social media contact.

This approach moved staff beyond theoretical awareness to a practical understanding of their safeguarding responsibilities, empowering them to act confidently when faced with challenging situations

The training also fostered open cultural dialogue and self-reflection, helping THF strengthen its duty of care framework. As a result, the programme became a benchmark for effective safeguarding practice within the Foundation.

Emergency Services

Embedding Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service’s STRIVE values and reinforcing senior leaders’ responsibilities to model these in practice.

The Leadership & Management Development Programme was delivered by Afta Thought for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service (LFRS), targeting over 400 senior managers including Chief Officers and Station Managers.

The programme focused on three key areas: Inspiring Leadership, Unconscious Bias, and Appraisal Skills, incorporating conference events with the Chief Fire Officer, workshops for effective performance conversations, and training to foster inclusive leadership.

It successfully embedded LFRS’s STRIVE values into leadership practices and improved staff confidence in handling challenging discussions. The initiative fostered greater awareness of unconscious bias, contributing to a more inclusive leadership culture and led to positive recognition that opened doors for further collaborations within LFRS and neighbouring fire services.

Its success also resulted in tailored programme rollouts for additional managerial levels and expanded team development projects.
